My 24 hours of media took place on Saturday February 12th from 10 am to 10 am Sunday February 13th. For me this activity was very difficult. I rely on media a lot, especially my cell phone because I talk to my mom and sister on the phone everyday. I also use my cell phone as my alarm clock because if I don’t set it, then I don’t wake up. Not having my alarm set was nice though because it gave me a chance to sleep in which I get to do on rare occasions. Not using my computer was even harder. I’m one of those people who constantly checks their email and facebook just because it’s a daily routine for me. I’m always talking to friends on facebook and skype so not being able to do this was extremely difficult. Another thing I had trouble avoiding was my iPod. I live off my iPod. Whenever I drive in the car, workout, or even just ride the bus, I listen to my iPod. Having to shut it off and put i away for a day
was excruciating.

My room is always messy. I am always too lazy to clean it because it takes too long so I figured, why not knock out a couple hours when I can’t watch TV or listen to music? Cleaning my room was definitely a time consumer. By the time I got everything picked up off the floor, put away, and vacuumed, nearly 2 and a half hours passed! Granted it didn’t help that I would get bored so I would take short breaks and just lay on my bed, but it still got cleaned!

Here’s what it looks all cleaned up! Because I was so proud of my work I decided to send this picture to my mom, but since I couldn’t do it my roommate had to do it for me.

After I finished cleaning I realized I had a pretty large pile of laundry in the corner of my room so I decided to do some laundry. Because I didn’t have anything to do Saturday, I decided to take a little nap while my laundry was in the wash. Once I was able to switch it to the dryer, my friends Kelsey and Casey and I decided to go on a hike at the parkway at rough ridge. I had never been hiking on the parkway before so I was really excited. The only problem was it was really windy that day and it made my eyes water! It looked like I was crying most of the hike! Secretly I was so sad that I was without technology all day.

Once we made it all the way to the top it felt like a great accomplishment!

After hiking for a couple hours we finally went back to our apartment and baked a cookie cake for my roommates birthday on Sunday. Unfortunately she got home early and found the cake so we decided to eat it that night. Chocolate chip cookies + funfetti icing = DELICIOUS!

Once we devoured the cake, I decided to go into my room and relax for a little bit. Whenever I have some down time I like to draw or paint, but this day I decided to doodle. I felt like a kindergarten! Because I'm secretly a 6 year old at heart, I own about 7 to 8 boxes of markers and finally had a reason to use them.

And this is what I came up with! Because I liked it so much I decided to hang it up on my wall with all my picture frames and signs. I love how I unintentionally made one of the shapes look like a duck :)

Finally once night began to settle in I decided I should be some what productive and do some homework. This took up a few hours because I had to read at least 4 different chapters in my textbooks. Luckily I didn't procrastinate too much and I was able to get all the reading done before I went to bed.

Finally at 9 am the next morning I pulled out my computer, iPod, and cell phone and counted down the minutes until my 24 hours was over. As I just sat on my couch, I felt as though they were all taunting me, wanting me to turn them all on before the time was up. But once 10 o'clock hit, I realized I didn't want to use them, and I just went back into my room and relaxed until I decided to use technology.

After completing this task, I realized it wasn't as much of a challenge as I thought it would be. Sure not being able to use my cell phone and iPod was tough, but it was nice knowing that I could do it again if I choose to. I know that there are other options to entertain myself like hiking, reading, and hanging out with friends, rather than staying cooped up in my room all day watching TV or being on my computer for hours on end. I would say that I completed this activity with success and although the things I did were fun, I wouldn't like to be completely cut off again!
